When I read this, I immediately remembered why it took me 40 years before I picked up a paint brush, finally at age 44. I saw my dad and sister paint professionally with water colors and oil paints all my life. I really did not envy them, as I accepted the notion that has been perhaps insinuated here today, that if you have no innate ability don't even bother trying. I bought into the lie, hook, line and sinker! I did have the innate ability to play music. That was my forte, yet...somewhere deep in my soul I "wished" I could indeed paint the sea and the ocean that I so much loved. This is I believe the authors point, when it says "one must have a burning thirst" for motivation.
Any kind of water is my healing energy. The ocean is one of those energies capable of "instantly" resetting your electromagnetic field and re-energizing the ions of the body. This is not just opinion but scientific fact, as seen through such means as Kirlian Photography. But, of course I held myself back, because God forbid, I dare not insult those with true "innate abilities." Did I mention I "could" become the laughing stock of everyone? This fear was debilitating.
The worst part is it's all true; I still have no natural ability and to this day I draw stick people no better than any challenged 3rd grader with the worst of drawing skills.
Yet today I look around my house because my little daughter and I went to Maui one summer with about 200 dollars of art supplies and a "wish." It was enough because as atrocious as my first paintings were, we had fun. This grew into something and a thirst for even more. Today I have about 30 seascapes on the realistic side, not abstracts. No innate ability just a drive, that "thirst" later on in life. The waiting though is my pont here. Do not wait ! All because somebody tells you, you are not a natural. You have every right to do what you love regardless of talent or anything natural going on. Buy a book, take a class and yes you may have to work harder at it than most, but perseverence is omnipotent.
Today I own and am the Managing Director of Beach Spa Resorts, for one reason: I still love the beach! It is my true passion. Doing what we love is empowering, no matter what we hear others telling us. I live by this and it nurtures my soul. It is about living a path with heart. Nothing is more healing too, then the Performing Arts. Thanks to the author for helping me remember how important all this is and that I need to offer more of this, the Performing Arts, to my own daughter.
